Deaths
The well-publicized deaths of 49-year-old Australian-born Scotland resident Verity Linn, 31-year-old Munich kindergarten teacher Timo Degen, and 53-year-old Melbourne resident Lani Marcia Roslyn Morris, while attempting to enter the Breatharian "diet," have drawn further criticism of the idea.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/453661.stm http://www.rickross.com/reference/breat/breat08.html Jim Vadim Pesnak, 63, and his wife Eugenia, 60, went to jail for three years on charges of manslaughter for their involvement in the death of Morris. Verity Lynn, the Scottish woman who inadvertently killed herself by choosing the Breatharian "diet" was a nominee for the 1999 Darwin Awards. She "took to the highlands", the article says, "with only a tent and her grit and determination." She died of hypothermia and dehydration, aggravated by lack of food. Jasmuheen claimed that her death was brought on by a psycho-spiritual problem, rather than a physiological one.

Jasmuheen has denied any involvement with the three deaths and claims she cannot be held responsible for the actions of her followers. In reference to the death of Lani Morris, she said that perhaps Morris was "not coming from a place of integrity and did not have the right motivation." http://www.rickross.com/reference/breat/breat08.html

Ram Bahadur Bomjon (born c. 9 April 1990, sometimes Bomjan, Banjan, or Bamjan), also known as Palden Dorje (his official Buddhist name), is from Ratanapuri village, Bara district, Nepal and is believed to be the reincarnation of Buddha by his supporters.

He drew thousands of visitors and media attention for spending months in meditation. Nicknamed the Buddha Boy, he began his meditation on 16 May 2005, allegedy disappeared from his hometown on 11 March 2006, and reappeared elsewhere in Nepal on 26 December 2006 only to leave again on 8 March 2007. On 26 March 2007, inspectors from the Area Police Post Nijgadh in Ratanpuri found Bomjon meditating inside a bunker-like square ditch of seven feet.

Feats of Inedia

An average human being who stops drinking will die of dehydration in three to four days. According to the Guinness Book of Records the longest time a human has survived without water is 18 days. Bomjon, on the other hand, does not appear to break his meditation to eat or drink.

Bomjon was observed not to leave the tree at least during the daytime, but nobody was allowed to approach him too closely. Between 5:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. nobody was allowed to see him, and a screen was erected for that purpose. Many people speculated that he ate and drank water during that time.

Some supporters believe that discussions of inedia are irrelevant, and that the ability to sit nearly motionless in the same position day after day, with no regard for extremes of weather including a cold winter and a monsoon season, is notable. For example, American writer George Saunders visited Bomjon and observed him for a single night, and was impressed by Bomjon's perfectly still stature even during an evening climate that seemed unbearably cold to the much more fully clothed journalist.[14]

In December 2005, a nine-member government committee led by Gunjaman Lama watched Bomjon carefully for 48 hours and observed him not to take any food or water during that time. A video recording was also made of this test. However, they were unable to approach closer than 3 meters or take readings of his vital signs.[15]. A group of physicians tried to conduct an independent study but were prevented from doing so by the screen erected at night.[citation needed] The Nepalese government planned a more careful scientific study but this plan was later scrapped.

In 2007, the Discovery Channel produced a documentary titled "The Boy With Divine Powers"[16]. On a first attempt, the film crew was required to stay outside the guarded barbed wire fence and their camera's night vision could not pick up a signal where Ram sat at the base of a tree during their non stop recording over four days. On a second attempt a few weeks later, however, the film crew was able to film Ram continuously for 96 hours, day and night, during which time he did not drink any fluids or eat any food. According to scientists on the documentary, an average person would be expected to die from kidney failure after 4 days without drinking any fluids. The boy showed no signs of classical physical deterioration caused by dehydration. At a close inspection conducted by the filming crew around the tree where Ram was sitting, no hidden water pipes or food stashes were found.

Baffled NASA summons Indian Guru, Hira Manek
Tuesday, July 1 2003 02:25 Hrs (IST)

Kochi: The premier US space agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), baffled by a new age guru, 66-year old Hira Rattan Manek's feat of living without solid food for substantial period, has invited him for tests so that it could possibly help them in their various programmes, Manek's family said.

Manek, who has not had any solid food for the past eight years, as claimed by his wife Vimlaben, has been surviving only on water and solar energy.

Manek, who is already in Orlando in the US giving series of lectures on solar energy, visited Kozhikode recently to participate in a felicitation function.

Vimblaben told reporters from Kozhikode that her husband required only two litres of water a day, had not taken a morsel of food since 1995, imbibing most of his energy from the Sun. Manek gazes at the sun only during "safe-periods" of an hour after sunrise and just before sunset.

It takes a person at least seven months to master this technique of gazing the Sun and imbibe energy through the eyes. As the body cells commence storing solar energy, gradually the hunger pangs vanish, Vimlaben claims.

Manek has fasted for 211 days at Kozhikode in 1995, 411 days at Ahmedabad from January 2001 to February 12, 2002. Last year in the US, he fasted for 130 days surviving only on water, she claims.

Vimlaben said at Orlando, Manek has been busy with his Solar Living Centre and New Era Spiritual centre and has been touring around the world showing the people the way to become free from mental and physical diseases and ways to control greed, desires and anger.

Manek is also penning a book "Braineuter", she said.

According information given by an Ahmedabad based Neurophysician Dr Sudhir V Shah in the internet, Manek had been subjected to test by the scientific community in Gujarat and the US including isolating him in a nursing home for more than a month and not allowing him to meet his relatives while on fast.

The medical specialists from India and the US, who had examined Manek from time to time, are unable to give a scientific explanation from their current clinical knowledge, though have declared the genuinity of his fast, he said.

Manek, his wife claimed, had researched ancient Jain and Hindu scriptures and experimented on himself under the strict guidance of medical scrutiny to "develop" a simple and scientific technique of harnessing Sun and Earth energy.

NASA: COULD AN ASTRONAUT LEARN TO SURVIVE BY PHOTOSYNTHESIS?
Perhaps the Columbia accident convinced NASA that a backup plan is needed in case astronauts are stranded on the Space Station (WN 14 Mar 03). According to the Hindustan Times, NASA turned to a survival expert, Hira Ratan Manek, a 64-year-old mechanical engineer from India. Manek claims to have survived for eight years on sunlight, water and a little tea. He is in the United States to show NASA how he does it. NASA scientists reportedly verified that Manek survived on water and sunlight for 130 days. The NASA Public Affairs Office confirmed to WN that the claim is true. This is a bold new approach. If the laws of nature stand in the way of a solution, it's time to change the laws.

Since June 18th, 1995, HRM has and continues to live only on sun energy and water. Occasionally, for hospitality and social purposes, he drinks tea, coffee and buttermilk. Until now, he had three strict fastings, during which he had just sun energy and only water and was under the control and observation of various science and medical teams.

The first of these fasting lasted for 211 days during 1995-96 in Calicut, India directed by Dr. C.K. Ramachandran, a medical expert on allopathy and ayurvedic medicine.

This was followed by a 411 day fast from 2000-2001 in Ahmedabad, India directed by an International team of 21 medical doctors and scientists led by Dr. Sudhir Shah (Dr. Shah's synopsis report) and Dr. K. K. Shah, the acting President of Indian Medical Association at that time. Dr. Maurie D. Pressman, MD also describes his experience with HRM in an article he wrote and later joined the team for the next observation on HRM.

After the excitement of the findings at Ahmadabad, HRM was invited to Thomas Jefferson University and University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he underwent a 130 day observation period. This Science/Medical Team wanted to observe and examine his retina, pineal gland and brain, therefore this observation team was led by Dr. Andrew B. Newberg, a leading authority on the brain and also featured in the recent movie "What the Bleep Do We Know", and by Dr. George C. Brenard, the leading authority on the pineal gland. Initial results found that the gray cells in HRM's brain are regenerating. 700 photographs have been taken where the neurons were reported to be active and not dying. Furthermore, the pineal gland was expanding and not shrinking which is typically what happens after mid fifties and its maximum average size is about 6 x 6 mm, however for HRM, it has been measured to be at 8 x 11 mm.

Lembrem: The NASA Public Affairs Office confirmed to WN that the claim is true.
